Anal Fistula Treatment (Anal Hole)

General Information About Anal Fistula (Anal Hole) Treatment

An anal fistula is a condition in which an abnormal channel or tunnel forms between the skin around the anus and the inside of the intestines. It usually occurs as a complication of an anal abscess and can cause serious discomfort. Anal fistulas occur as a result of infection and cause feces to leak through the tunnel, causing inflammation of the skin. If left untreated, this condition can become chronic and significantly reduce the patient's quality of life.

What are the symptoms of anal fistula?

Common symptoms of anal fistula include:

Pain: Intense pain is felt around the anus while going to the toilet or sitting.

Swelling and Redness: Swelling and redness may occur around the anus.

Discharge: It is common to have a yellow, green, or bloody discharge from around the anus. This discharge is usually foul-smelling.

Itching and Irritation: There may be constant itching and irritation in the fistula area.

Fever: In some cases, fever may also occur due to infection.

Why Does Anal Fistula Occur?

Anal fistulas usually occur when an abscess forms around the anus and then drains. In addition, conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and other inflammatory bowel diseases can also cause anal fistulas. In rare cases, trauma, surgery, or sexually transmitted infections can also cause anal fistulas.

What are the Anal Fistula Treatment Methods?

The aim of anal fistula treatment is to eliminate the infection, close the fistula canal and prevent recurrence. Treatment options include:

Seton Technique: Using a rope or rubber ring that is tied through the fistula canal, the fistula is gradually closed. This method helps the fistula drain and heal.

Fistulotomy: It is the surgical opening and cleaning of the fistula channel. This technique is generally used in superficial fistulas and has a high success rate.

LIFT (Ligation of Intersphincteric Fistula Tract) Technique: In this method, the section of the fistula tract between the intestinal muscles is ligated and closed. This ensures the preservation of the anal muscles and reduces the risk of loss of control.

Fibrin Sealants: Special adhesives injected into the fistula tract encourage closure and healing of the tract.

Endorectal Advancement Flap Surgery: In more complicated cases, the fistula tract is covered with a piece of tissue taken from the rectum. This method can be effective for deep fistulas.

Post-Operative Recovery Process

The recovery process after anal fistula treatment may vary depending on the treatment method applied and the general health status of the patient. Op.Dr.Çağlar Ertekin offers the following recommendations to his patients in the post-operative process:

Wound Care: Cleanliness of the surgical site is important to minimize the risk of infection. Regular dressings may be required.

Diet: It is recommended to consume fibrous foods and drink plenty of water to ensure soft stools. Constipation should be avoided.

Pain Management: Painkillers recommended by the doctor can be used to relieve post-operative pain.
